Evaluation - What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product

I have created a short motion picture video which sums up what I have learnt about technologies from the process of constructing my product.

Overall, I have learnt that the use of different technologies can be extremely useful to appeal to different types of audiences. For example, younger audiences may appeal more to social sites such as youtube and pinterest, whereby older audiences may be available on Facebook and Vimeo. These different technologies can be used to reach a range of different audiences which is important in the film industry as it can help when advertising and promoting their film to a particular audience.

I have also learnt how the Adobe workshop works and how it can be very effective when editing a movie, and layering sounds and videos over one another and that it is also a way of placing effects over a clip to change the pace or appearance of the shot.

Evaluation - Who would be the audience for your media product

I have created a powerpoint and placed it onto slideshare to show who would be the audience for my media product. I have based my film around a particular demographic and psychographic audience all of which is explained within the powerpoint,, and these were taken into account when, filming, editing, creating a treatment and also when choosing the characters and mise-en-scene of our opening title sequence.

Evaluation - What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

This is the link to Film4's website, a page which advertises 12 years a slave. This would be relevant to my product as the taboo idea of a paedophile would be shown on the small art institutions, such as film4. 12 Years A Slave - Film4

Evalution - How does your media product represent particular social groups

My media product focuses on the negative representations of particular social groups. For example, the paedophile is represented as threatening, the young girl is represented as vulnerable, and within the treatment the single mother is portrayed as being unfit and unworthy. We have used these negative representations as they are stereotypically seen within Thriller films.  For example: There is a vulnerable child is seen in the Thriller film 'man on fire'

In the movie 'The Frozen Ground' we see the stereotypically threatening kidnapper, who too, is portrayed as an average Joe with a wife and children.

And in the film 'Taken' shows how the unworthy decisions of a single mother leads up to the kidnapping of her daughter. This is seen as the father is reluctant to let her go, but by the persuasion of the mother, eventually lets her. This could be interpreted as 'unfit' as the mother makes her daughter lie to the protective father, which intern lead her into a major kidnapping.

Preliminary Task

In our preliminary task we chose to conform and break the 180 degree rule. This was because we wanted to see the effects of it being broken for ourselves, to understand the relevance of the rule and also to potentially see if this effect would be useful in our opening title sequence. This however didn't work too well, as it broke the seamless flow of the edits but was a useful exercise to learn from. The 180 degree rule applies to the angle which the camera is shot at, shot reverse shots require the 180 degree rule which involves using one side of the couple and filming on just that side. This prevents jump cuts, which can vaguely be seen at the end of our task where the broken 180 degree rule was applied.

We have also realised that with a tight frame, the action seems to happen faster. In my opening sequence I will either need to slow down the action if using a tighter frame, or make sure the frame is wider in order to create a perfect scene.

Storyboard

Storyboard for Opening Title Sequence

For my story board I have created an 18 shot summery of the main shots I plan to use in my title sequence. These shots I have drawn include the look and feel of the shot as it shows the angle and size which each shot needs to be. There are many close up shots on my story board. This is because in order to create the tension and suspense needed in a thriller film, there needs to be a sense of enigma and mystery. Therefore close up shots are good for revealing teasers of the character, without giving away their full identity. 
I have sketched the shots in detail and labelled each shot in the order which I plan to edit them to. This gives a general idea of what my final opening title sequence will look like.
However, during the filming we were unable to access some of the props needed and better ideas came to mind during the filming, therefore small elements of the storyboard were altered in order to create the best opening title sequence possible.

Location Recce

 Our first location was taken place in the art department. This was because of the old furniture and surroundings which created a vintage effect and fitted the theme of film as it was set in the 1960's. We also found that the room could become quite dark if we shut down all the blind, which was useful as we intended to have candles and shadows which create mystery and are conventions of thriller movies. We also needed enough room to set up, and we found that in this room we had enough space in order to shoot or footage with artificial lighting. We used a dado light to enhance the shadows, lighting and silhouette the character. This room also gives us access to many plug sockets around the room, enabling us to move the lighting into any place which we wanted.

We also filmed our opening sequence in a woodland area on a rainy day so that we could capture the welly boots, in the mud. This was important as the wellies were used to cannote a sense of youth. We also chose these woods as there are areas of space which lead to small pathways and thick trees. This gave us the space to set up the equipment and still capture our shots in narrow footpaths. We also wanted to show the girl hiding behind a tree, this was a useful location as the trees were thick enough to completely hide the young girl. We used a reflectable in natural light in order to create a brighter, but realistic setting. This was important as we wanted to enhance the girls face in a natural way as this cannotes innocence and vulnerability.

Thriller Timeline

 

I have created a timeline by capturing the second of each time a title is shown on screen, and wrote down the name of the title and the length of time it is on screen for. I have intentionally used a thriller movie to analyse as it will give me an idea of the positioning and length of the titles used in thriller films, so that I can take this into account when creating my title sequence. This will also benefit me as it gives me a reminder of the conventions for opening title sequences altogether, so that I am clear about what is needed to be shown in my sequence.

Costume and Make-up

For our costume and make up we will need to ensure that the mise-en-scene of our opening title sequence is clear as this helps to create the genre and identity of the characters.

We will need to have:

• Old, rough hands - This will be effective as the desaturated, untidy hands will generate the age and gender of the character. This we hope will make it clear that this particular character is a middle aged man. The idea of the rough hands signify age and lack of care. This will create an eery mood as the dirty hands create that psychotic mood, which will also be shown through the sound.
• Rolled up sleeves - This cannotes a sense of business, as though the character is working on something. This is important in our opening sequence as we need to create an enigma, therefore making our audience aware that he has a plot, but keeps them questioning what.
• Desaturated face (powdered and pale) - The idea of a pale, powedered face creates an identity and personality of the character, as lack of colour in the face is usually associated with an illness or an unhealthy lifestyle. This will create an overall feel that this character is not particularly healthy and may be constructed as being rather insane or disturbed. 
• Welly boots on tiny feet - This will be the binary opposite of our other character, which will create a contrast in our opening sequence, making it obvious to the audinece that this chracter is to be percieved as vulnerable. The small, brightly coloured welly boots will signify youth and joy, which will help to generate symathy and a protective approach toward this character, from the opening sequence.
