Film Ratings

Film Ratings
All classification decisions are based on the BBFC's published and regularly updated Guidelines. The Guidelines are the product of extensive public consultation, research and accumulated experience of the BBFC over many years. They reflect current views on film, DVD and video game regulation.
The film ratings are the 'age' which the movie has been rated. This is accessed with the amount of inappropriate language, violence or sexual scenes included in the film.

I have found some information from this particular website which explains the  basic ideas on the ratings of movies. This teaches what particular things scare children and what sets the boundaries for each rating --- http://fun.familyeducation.com/movie/values/57498.html

http://www.bbfc.co.uk/ --- this is the BBFC webpage which gives each rating and explains what it means and what themes may be passed with that particular rating. I have learnt how the classification works and why they do it. This is used to protect younger children from viewing harmful or unsuitable content. The 2 key principles which are considered are:
  • First, films and videos should be allowed to reach the widest audience appropriate for their theme and treatment.
  • Second, adults should be free to choose what they see, provided it remains within the law and is not potentially harmful
